An Imperfect Family
Synopsis:
Narrated in the first person by its protagonist Cándida, a woman on the cusp of 60, this novel is an account of a profound emotional crisis whose course and consequences are bound to touch the hearts of many readers. The eldest daughter of a wealthy family, Cándida returns to her native Barcelona to accompany her mother, a despotic matriarch, in her final days at a hospice.
Her only relatives are her brother Ángel and her paternal aunt, who is a sworn enemy of her mother and the keeper of the family secrets. This is a work about women for women focused on those who were born in the early 50s and still vividly remember the post-war period and their home towns. They were the first to gain access to education and culture en masse in the belief that this would help to ‘save’ them from their family demons, demons that nonetheless are bound to catch up with them sooner or later.
