Synopsis:

Love Was Enough is a hymn to acceptance and freedom. With this beautiful fable, Máximo Huerta speaks to us of the value of difference in the face of normality and how love is the best antidote to the inevitable frustrations in our lives.

Despite his apparent weakness, Elio Ícaro isn’t like the other children. He has a gift that makes him different: he can fly. Used to putting up with insults of his classmates, Ícaro feels proud of this characteristic, which makes him unique. His parents, Sol and Dédalo, decide to hide his talent: they want to protect their child from jokes and hurtful remarks, and they believe that a normal life for a child means passing unnoticed. The consequence is that Elio will struggle with himself his whole life, trying to deny something that defines him and dreaming of the silence that will liberate his marvelous talent.

Throughout this story, which is narrated by Elio as an adult, the boy grows, sees his parents separate, and looks for answers to all that’s happening around him while his inner struggle continues. Despite his years of suffering, sacrifice, and longing, Elio will end up free to fly, becoming a star in the firmament, just as his mother would have wished.

Reviews

Love Was Enough begins and ends as a fable, but the story takes place in an intimate novel that always saves room for intrigue. Elio’s life and emotional awakening go hand in hand with memories and family secrets that are slowly unveiled. As the novel teaches, no one can get free of themselves or their identity, which always manages to flourish despite any barriers in the way.
