Synopsis:

One afternoon, a few days before Christmas, little Bashira disappears without a trace from the gardens of a hotel near the marshes of the Ter River. While Commissioner Narváez and his team mobilize to find clues, Detective Nico Ros, who has arrived in Llafranc to spend the holidays with his family, is hired to assist with the investigation by Jamal Daher, a well-known drug trafficker in the area and Nico's childhood friend.

In spite of his discomfort with Jamal's request, Nico leaves no stone unturned in his efforts to locate the little girl. Was she kidnapped or did she leave the gardens of her own free will? Why hasn't anyone asked for a ransom yet? Have there been other similar disappearances? Despite the difficulties of the case and the haunting memories of his painful past, Nico will rely on the loyalty of the police team assigned to the case, headed up by Commissioner Narváez and his Sergeant Marcos Quiroga. Time seems to be running out for Nico, and this is not the only obstacle he will have to face.

The inclement winter weather, the complicated terrain, and the secrets and lies of the inhabitants of the marshes will complicate this search against the clock. With each passing hour, the hopes of finding Bashira alive grow smaller. Unexpected deaths, songs in the night, and the help of Sol, known as the witch of the marshes, increase the tension of this exciting thriller set in an inhospitable landscape.

Reviews

Marshes, a novel written by a mother and son team, masterfully distinguishes itself from the traditional canons of the crime novel, shedding some light into the bleak darkness.

The disappearance of a girl in the marshes of the River Ter and a detective burdened by an unwell mind and his difficult past are the elements of this direct and cruel, but also emotional and different, thriller.
