The Aroma of Crime

Publishing date:24/02/2015

Synopsis:

Inspector Vicente Parra at the Amara police station (San Sebastián) is assigned two apparently very different cases. The fashion designer Elena Castaño has been savagely beaten at her mansion and although the evidence points to a robbery, it soon becomes clear that this was a personal crime made to look like an assault.

The other case is the death from renal and hepatic failure of a young man called Cristian José, a porter at the university. The young man’s mother suspects that the death wasn’t due to natural causes as large amounts of cash were found at his house and recently he’d been living a lifestyle that didn’t fit with his salary. Vicente soon discovers that the suspects are all linked to the world of gastronomy, a suspicion confirmed by the findings of the autopsy of Cristian’s body.

Reviews

A classic crime novel in the style of Agatha Christie but with the added ingredient of the culinary world of a unique city, San Sebastián, depicting its history and characters along with recipes the author skilfully inserts into the text.

Crime, sex and money set in a city of wonderful food, from the humblest kitchens to internationally renowned gastronomic centres.

Xabier Gutiérrez is a chef who works at the prestigious restaurant Arzak, and elsewhere. He also has a cookery blog, takes part in radio programs and will soon appear on television.

A very entertaining story with a dual plot, a vivid setting and a fashionable subject: the world of gastronomy.

The author knows how to get the reader’s attention, leading them on a classic investigation into an original environment in a very topical genre.
