Synopsis:

Caught between fascist harassment, British hostility and Stalin’s policy

With this volume, Professor Ángel Viñas closes his trilogy on the Republic and the Civil War. While in the first volume the author analyzed the beginning of the coup d’état against the Republic, the shameful abandonment of the Republic by the Western democracies and the turn of the Republic towards the Soviet Union, in the second he masterfully narrated the crucial period of the conflict between the autumn of 1936 and the summer of 1937.

In this third volume, based as always on an exhaustive, almost obsessive, research of all the available documentary resources, Ángel Viñas follows step by step most of the Negrín government’s management and analyzes the strategies of the British and French governments bent on appeasing the fascist dictators. In parallel, he demystifies the Soviet interests as well as Stalin’s role in the war. In the face of so many undocumented or false accounts of the civil war, the very solid work of Angel Viñas forces us to seriously rethink many of the leçons reçues in order to view in a new light the genesis, development and end of that conflict, in which the Republic saved its honor by opposing the aggression of the Axis powers.
