Violence against women, the violent interference of the state and men to control women’s bodies, has been documented for 4000 years.

This book, part journalistic report and part informative essay, talks about honor killings, underground abortions, gang rapes, child marriages, punishments for stepping out of line, prostitution and white slavery, female genital mutilation, and other, more subtle, less evident forms of violence: judicial sentences, the exclusion of women from history, public humiliation and pornography, the salary gap, and the submissiveness demanded by custom and religion.

This is the longest war in history. And it still isn’t over.
