Once again, this is a choral novel, but the protagonist is a woman who has no choice but to:
a) Rebuild herself from scratch after a harrowing divorce.
b) Rebuild her grandparents’ house; a tumbledown cottage on the banks of the Manzanares river.
c) Look for lodgers, not because she needs the money, although she does, but because it’s the best way she can think of to avoid living alone.

But because she’s a sensible woman in spite of it all, she decides to get a hold of herself and set some rules that she knows from bitter experience make living together easier. For example:

• SHOWING COMPASSION TO SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T WANT IT IS PROHIBITED.
