May 29, 1525. A pilgrim is murdered not long before he reaches the city of Burgos. This is just one of a series of strange deaths occurring along the French Way of Saint James. The Archbishop of Santiago asks Fernando de Rojas to investigate the case.

The celebrated investigator will have to follow the Camino de Santiago on the trail of criminals, and for this, he will rely on the aid of Elías do Cebreiro, a priest and archivist from the cathedral in Santiago. On the way, he will face all sorts of challenges and dangers, will enter strange and mysterious places, and will meet many voyagers, each with a secret.
