Forty romantic cemeteries: stories of love,
memory and devotion written in stone
Eternal Loves is not a travel guide, but it will take the reader far.
Everything begins with a final gift: a message sent by an elderly
man with whom the author had long shared stories about
cemeteries, prisons and asylums. What follows is the result
of years spent visiting cemeteries around the world, in search
of true stories of love that endured time, oblivion and, in many
cases, death itself.
Blending memory, reportage and reflection, each chapter leads
the reader to anonymous graves and famous tombs alike, from
Paris to Sarajevo, from San José, Costa Rica, to Tokyo. These
are stories of lovers separated by war, social class or family
decisions, but also of those who chose not to forget: widowers
who still write letters, travellers who leave flowers on distant
graves, couples who managed to be buried together after years
of separation.
Each cemetery becomes an open letter — intimate, unsettling
and quietly moving — reminding us that love, when it is genuine,
does not end with death.
Intimate, real-life told through places where absence still
speaks. A human and atmospheric approach to cultural
heritage.
